The Object
A simple 19th-century antique frame, sourced individually in Paris — its gilding worn with time to a burgundy patina.
The Finished Object
A quieter, later Kisling. The archival edition carries the withdrawn gaze; the simplest antique frame in the collection — its gilding worn through to burgundy — was found separately in Paris. While the print itself is an edition, this specific antique frame is unique. The two are paired once and will never be repeated.

The Work
The colours should not work. Burgundy, yellow, teal — and yet they hold together with a force that is almost physical.

This is a later Kisling — not the glamour of the pearl necklace, not the high society of the 1920s. Something more interior. The figure looks away, and that averted gaze is the work. To my eye, it feels less like indifference than withdrawal.

Kisling and Modigliani were close friends within the same Montparnasse circle. Look at this image, then look at ESM-03.
The Pairing
The simplest frame in the collection — until you look closely. With time the gold has worn away and a soft burgundy shows through: patina, the colour of the years. The same burgundy sits behind the figure in the image. In this pairing, one antique surface holds two colours, and the portrait carries an echo of two painters.
In the Space
Placed in a quiet reading area or a niche — restraint rather than announcement.
