The Work
She arrives before you see her. The red, the green, the pearls catching light.

Kisling’s portraits are usually forceful — strong contours, intense eyes, faces that hold their ground. This one is different. She is open, almost soft. Look at the lower edge: there is a dedication in the painter’s hand. This painting was made for someone, and that person’s name is still there.
The Pairing
She was a woman accustomed to the gaze of an audience. Valentine Tessier was one of the celebrated figures of the Paris stage, later Renoir’s Emma Bovary. The red and green behind her reads as a stage curtain rather than a wall. Below, in the painter’s hand — à Valentine Tessier, de tout cœur. With all my heart.
